professional horse riding
Can a horse be ridden again after having babies and remember all the previous training and riding lessons?

I am not an expert on horses, so I just need some opinions from anyone that does know. I am getting a 4-5 year old horse that is pregnant. She previously already had one baby the year before. Normally, this horse is gentle and has had plenty of people ride on it before in the past. But once she got pregnant, nobody has ridden on her. So basically, it will be about 2 years that she has not been ridden. Does anyone know if she will forget everything and have to start all her training over again as if she has never been ridden? The horse is not being used for any professional events, more for family riding and things like that. Appreciate any suggestions. I know we can get a professional trainer, but we cannot exactly afford them at the moment.

It might take a little while, but since she is so young, she will not know very much anyway. Best thing would be to start putting tack on her, lead her around in it, lunge her with it on and get her listening to your voice instructions and moving forward. Expect a few bucks to begin with, that is one of the reason why you lunge her.

Then have someone who she trusts hold her and get another person to give a competent but light weight rider a leg up to lay over her back, but not on top of her. Get the rider to stroke her opposite sides and then quietly bring the leg over to being astride the horse but still stroking and lying low. The rider should slowly sit up and once they have the stirrups stand and stroke her neck, and then ask the holder to lead her forward. The leg up person should walk along side with his or hand on the rider’s leg incase of fireworks.

This is effectively re backing the horse. You can take it from there, but take it slowly. Remember her muscles will be totally lax having nursed two foals (which in my opinion is rather young for her to be doing that, but you cannot help it.) so you would start with 15 minutes walking under saddle building it up in 5 minute stages until she is walking about 1 and a half hours. Then add some trotting – about 5 minutes in two parts of that 1 and a half hours. And again add a minute on each day of trotting until she is trotting for about 20 minutes but not all in one go.

An older mare coming back into work might need less back tracking! It depends also a bit on temperament.
