Barb $17.84 2010 debut from this Australian ’supergroup’ featuring Liam Finn, Lawrence Arabia, Connan Mockasin, Eliza-Jane and Seamus Ebbs. Seeding the first thoughts of Barb while all living in London, it took three years of fantasizing, cross-pollinating and some humorous e-mail chains before these five friends found themselves back in NZ at Roundhead Studios. “It seemed only natural” muses Liam. “We have been involved in each others music for so long… getting up to play at each others shows… touring together when possible, we knew starting a band together would be fun… but we had no idea what it would sound like.” Barb’s sound, however, can only be described as ‘different’. Different from what the band expected, different from the crap you hear when you turn on the radio, different from the latest Danger Mouse production, probably different from what this blurb will lead you to imagine. BARB $8.47 An Australian/New Zealand supergroup of sorts, BARB are nominally fronted by Liam Finn and feature his sometime duet partner Eliza-Jane Barnes; Lawrence Arabia; and two members of Connan & the Mockasins, Connan himself and Seamus Ebbs. Everybody involved in the project has deep roots in music — Finn and Barnes grew up with famous fathers — and their eponymous album does have a relaxed, comfortable feel, with the quintet dabbling around with all manner of studio sounds, placing a considerably emphasis on feel over form. Which isn’t to say there are no songs here, but BARB is definitely a mood album, rolling steadily along in a thick haze, frequently stopping for spacious instrumental interludes before circling back to elliptical open-ended pop songs.
